Keep the Message Human When Creative Tools Get Smarter

Keep the Message Human When Creative Tools Get Smarter

By Rhonda J. Felder

New creative tools can help a small ministry team do work that once required more time, money, and specialists. A director can mock up a set, clean rehearsal audio, add captions, or use an AI assistant to explore story ideas. Those possibilities are useful. Yet a polished production can still miss the people it was meant to serve.

Before choosing a tool, return to the pastor’s vision. What biblical truth should this play reveal, and what response does it invite? Write each answer in one sentence. If the team cannot name them, don't move forward.

Use technology to widen participation, not to erase the ministry team’s gifts. Captions may help more people follow the story. A simple projection may establish place without an expensive set. A shared rehearsal recording can help a volunteer practice at home. Creative, decide which tools solve real problems.

Be especially careful with story and voice. An AI-generated scene may offer a starting point, but a playwright must provide insight to Scripture, character motives, and emotional truth. Does the dialogue sound like people who could actually live in this community? Does it honor the passage and the context? Ask a leader or trusted biblical reader to review interpretation, and invite actors to flag lines that feel false.

Authenticity also means telling the truth about how a piece was made. Get permission before using someone’s testimony, likeness, voice, music, or photographs. If you use generated images or voices, avoid presenting them as real people or real ministry events. The audience should be able to trust what the production asks them to believe.

Finally, watch a rehearsal without the stage in mind. Can the Saints and the Ain’ts understand the character’s struggle and intention? Are cast and crew growing through the process, or merely creating an impressive effort? What God does in the team is just as important as what He does in the audience.

Quick checklist

☐ State the biblical message intended

☐ Name the specific barrier each technological tool will remove.

☐ Have a human review Scripture, dialogue, and cultural details.

☐ Secure permission for testimonies, images, voices, and music.

☐ Ask a fresh viewer what the story communicated.

Modern tools can support Inspired Performance when the ministry stays accountable for the message. Solve problems that make room for us to see ourselves in the story of God.

Preach the message. Teach the truth. Reach the community.
